Kel Valley is located 19 kilometers (12 miles) from Sharda and 155 kilometers (96 miles) from Muzaffarabad, near the Line of Control. It is a small valley 2097 meters (6880 feet) above sea level. It is one of the most charming and beautiful places in Neelam. The Shounter River meets the river Neelam at this place and heads towards Gilgit Agency over the Shandur Pass which is 4420 meters (14502 feet) above sea level. Kel is a base camp for mountaineering activities up to “Sarawaali Peak“, which is 6326 meters (20755 feet) high, and the glacier (about 25 km long) which is said to be the tallest peak and longest glacier in Azad Kashmir.
Buses run daily on this route. It is advisable to rent a jeep from Authmuqam for travel into valley. Horses and ponies can be kept locally to go into the interior of the valley. Banks, colleges, bazaars, PCOs, and tourist motels are also available here. The border village about 38 km ahead of Kel is not yet exposed. Tao Butt, Jamwari, Sardari and Halmat are famous for their exquisite beauty. A long track from Kel leads to Nanga Parbat on Shounter Gali which is 4420 m (14502 feet) above the sea level. A beautiful plateau of Arang Kel can be found after a 2 hour hike from Kel to a distance of about 460 meters (1500 feet) decline form Neelam river is a worth seeing place.
